Hey! I’m Stephen.

I’m a writer and editor based in Providence, Rhode Island. I mostly work around food and drink, and specifically wine and spirits.

I’m a former academic: I have a Ph.D. in English from Brown University, where I wrote about the state philosophy of the Soviet Union and American literature. My interest there carries over to my interest in wine, and the topics I cover include wines from Eastern Europe and Central Asia: Georgia, Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Armenia, Ukraine, and the like.

I’m also deeply fascinated by absinthe and am working on a longer project about it.

My goal is, and always has been, to use words to appreciate the old and the new alike; to understand the difficult; and to bring people together around shared objects and experiences. I love to break things down to see how they work, and find out how to translate them into clear language without compromising their richness.

In addition to my Ph.D., I also hold a B.A. From Yale University, a M.St. from the University of Oxford, and a WSET Level 2 in Wines certification.
